Welcome to St. Catherine’s C. of E. Primary and Nursery School.  We hope that you will come to feel part of our school and that we can work as partners together, helping your child to achieve in all areas of school life.

St Catherine’s is a Church primary school that has close links with the community and a very experienced and caring staff.  We want success for all our children and are proud of all their achievements.  We are particularly pleased when we see them grow in confidence and self-assurance.

At St Catherine’s it is important for us to meet individual needs.  We find that by having high expectations of pupils they develop high expectations of themselves.  There is a broad and balanced curriculum that allows pupils to progress and flourish.  We also put a great deal of emphasis on personal, social and moral development and work hard to make school a secure and caring place.

The purpose of this handbook is to give you a flavour of the school, its general ethos, aims and administrative procedures.  It is only an introduction and cannot replace a visit, when you can come and see the school at work and appreciate at first hand the quality of education that we offer our pupils.

Admissions

When you know that your son or daughter is going to attend St Catherine’s School you can collect an admission form from the school office.  Ideally you should register by the time your child is two.

If your son or daughter is starting school for the first time and you have already registered with the school, then we will get in touch with you in the term before your child is due to begin in the Nursery.  Children normally start full time school in the school year in which they become five years old.

When the time comes to apply for a full time place for your child at the school  all parents need to make another application directly to Devon County.  Unfortunately, should the Reception Class be over-subscribed, acceptance into full-time education does not automatically follow acceptance into the nursery.

Nursery children will be offered either five morning (9:15 to 11:45 a.m.) or five afternoon sessions (1:00 to 3:30 p.m.) and starting dates will depend on birthdays.

The School

The school was founded in March 1898.  It is a Voluntary Aided Church of England School and this tradition is maintained.

The original school was built to serve the children or workers at the local tile factory.  It offered education to children aged 5 – 14, but as the national education system developed, it became a Primary School serving children aged 5 -11

The old school

Until the 1990’s the school was close to the main centre of population at Heathfield but the new housing development, where the school is today, was a considerable distance from the school.

The Governors, Diocese and the Education Authority worked diligently for nearly twenty years to get the new school and our roll has increased from numbers in the 50’s to 151 full time and 41 part time pupils (including Nursery) as at February 2006.

We moved into the brand new building in September 2005 which provides a hall, ICT suite, library, seven classrooms and a nursery, with playing field and large playground.  The school is surrounded by trees.
