Like all state schools, The Park Community School is required to have a Board of Governors who are responsible for the oversight of the school’s performance. Ours is a largely longer-term strategic role – we support, advise and guide the Head and his colleagues. In partnership with the staff, we work in pursuit of the school’s aims and objectives, seeking excellence and achievement for all, enabling every student to realise his or her full potential.

The Board comprises 20 governors drawn from a wide range of backgrounds from in the school, parents and members of the community at large. The 20 members are made up of:

  • 7 parent governors – elected by parents and students of the school
  • 4 staff governors – 3 teachers and 1 support staff elected by their colleagues
  • 4 LEA governors – appointed by the Local Education Authority
  • 5 community governors – co-opted by the other governors from members of the community
Each governor’s tenure lasts for 4 years after which they can stand for re-election or appointment.

We meet as a full board four times during the academic year; in November we hold our Annual General Meeting at which we present the Head’s annual report to those parents who wish to attend; we then elect a chairperson for the year and another governor to act as deputy.

During the year, our  work is conducted through four committees each dealing with specific areas of business; each committee comprises 6 to 8 members and meets four times each year.

Resources Committee – deals with financial matters – setting and monitoring the budget, staffing issues, bids for external funding, accommodation – upkeep of the school and new facilities.

Community Committee – concerned with student welfare, behaviour, moral and physical welfare, school uniform, involvement of parents and the broader community.

Curriculum Committee – is responsible for monitoring subject departments, exam marking and assessments, staffing and staff development, policies on homework marking and assessment of work.

Executive Committee – oversees the work of other committees by receiving reports and delegated items to their agenda, deals with urgent matters and commends those staff that have made particularly valuable contributions to the life of the school.

Are you interested in becoming a Governor? You need to have an interest in education in general and in Park Community School in particular and be prepared to commit a reasonable amount of time and energy to support the school: previous experience is not necessary! Get in touch with the School in the first place – the Head and I would be glad to talk to you on an informal basis.
