We are a small village school of approximately 120 children, situated on the edge of North Devon . We have a wide catchment area, taking in at least nine villages and hamlets.
The school was built in the 1970’s in the ‘open plan’ style.
However, we have recently undergone refurbishment in our Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 area, creating a more appropriate teaching and learning space for younger children with immediate access to outdoors.
In the Key Stage 2 area refurbishment has given us a Classroom for the Future. This was created using sustainable materials and it has given us access to technical equipment including an interactive white board and video conferencing.
We are fortunate to have large school grounds which we are currently developing with a cultivated garden area, a wildlife area with a large enclosed pond and two football pitches. We are hoping to include an amphitheatre, due for completion in the summer holidays.
We are keen to promote outdoor learning and have become involved with ‘ Forest School ’, an initiative that originated in Denmark . The children have the opportunity to experience Forest School twice during their time at the school, spending half a day per week for at least ten weeks learning from and about environmental issues.
We are also keen to promote a healthy life style and offer healthy snack time for mid morning break and healthy school dinners, alongside opportunities during the day to exercise both our bodies and our minds.
We offer a range of extra curricular activities from football, netball, and cricket clubs to ICT, gardening and music opportunities.
There is a Breakfast and After School club running in the school hall daily. Holiday club runs when the need is identified.
We are developing close links with our Pre-school. The children are working alongside our Foundation Stage children for at least one session per week, on creative activities or Forest School opportunities.
We are also working with Parent Learning, Children Learning offering courses for parent/carers in school. At present we are offering our parent/carers an Induction to School Course to enable them to feel confident about their child starting school and informing them about how they can support their child. We have also offered Computer courses, Literacy and Numeracy courses and a ‘Making Games/resources’ for a Games library that parents can use to support their children’s learning.
We hope that the school is seen as very much part of the community.
