Welcome to Alderman Smith School, a specialist Sports College.

At Alderman Smith we value each child as an individual where they feel that they matter, know that they are making progress and have the support, encouragement and opportunities to unlock and develop their potential.  Through working together we enable our pupils to take their place as successful adults and citizens in tomorrow's community.

About our school

Alderman Smith is an 8 form entry, mixed comprehensive school set in extensive grounds with a wide range of excellent facilities and opportunities. 240 children are admitted each year and enjoy lessons in classes based on friendship groups and ability.  The admission criteria are set by Warwickshire County Council;  further information and details of our priority area can be found by visiting www.warwickshire.gov.uk or by telephoning 01926 410410.

All children have their potential measured upon entry and their performance is regularly assessed through continuously monitoring their progress towards meeting, and exceeding, their persona and academic targets. We believe that by owning their personalised areas of development children develop a greater sense of responsibility and are more likely to succeed. Knowing how well you are doing and what to do to get better is fundamental to life at Alderman Smith. We offer a broad and balanced range of learning opportunities designed to identify and develop each child's potential whatever their abilities or interests. All children are given every encouragement to do as well as they possibly can.

The learning support department is excellent with reading recovery schemes producing dramatic results. All children have the opportunity to use the Homework Club where the school's library is open after school with specialist staff available to support and extend learning at all levels.

Alderman Smith is a school full of opportunities with a forward looking, pupil centred perspective. Whatever a child's ability, potential or talents there is something at the school to discover and enjoy.

As well as providing an excellent education, Alderman Smith School also offers each pupil opportunities to develop skills, talents and interests in a wide range of after school sports and activities. The broad curriculum that all pupils follow acts as a springboard for new experiences in Sport, Outdoor Education, Drama, Music and many others outside of normal lessons.

The school has a strong tradition of drama productions of an extremely high standard, supported by music where extensive opportunities exist to individually study an instrument or perform with other children. Sports Clubs include volleyball, aerobics, netball, football, athletics, table tennis, hockey, dance, multi-gym and many others. Industry days for all year groups, ICT and homework clubs, 'subject surgeries' for pupils needing help, Duke of Edinburgh Schemes, residential trips, voluntary community work, work experience, college and university taster days and many other activities all make Alderman Smith a busy school.

It is hoped that the vast majority of children will enrich their learning experience through having equal access to opportunities available to them during, and after, school. The broad curriculum does not discriminate on the basis of gender or ethnicity with an equal opportunity for all.

By carefully managing their time, children can learn to prioritise, to maintain a balance between work and play, develop interests, broaden their horizons and develop positive attitudes.

Aims & Expectations

Alderman Smith School has, as its mission statement, to strive to be a centre of high quality learning. This means giving all pupils the skills, knowledge and understanding to lead purposeful and successful lives. The journey from an 11 year old child to a successful school leaver is one full of challenges and rewards. Alderman Smith is a large school where every individual matters. It is full of opportunities and has high expectations. We seek to work closely with parents and the community, preparing children for their futures.

Alderman Smith School recognised the responsibility placed on us in accepting a child at the school. Parents and school share the common goal of working together to develop and unlock a child's potential. We encourage the development of home/school links where we can both share concerns and celebrate achievements. Each pupil will have a Form Tutor and Year Head that will stay with them throughout their time at school.

We have a good record of attendance at Alderman Smith School. All absences are followed up by Form Tutors, helped by Heads of Year and our Education Social Worker where necessary. Any absence that is not covered by a note from parents becomes an unauthorised absence. Please help us by sending a note each time your son or daughter is away from school. It is helpful if you can also telephone the school on the first day of absence. Future employers, colleges and universities always request a reference on a pupil's punctuality and attendance. We expect pupils to be in school by 8.50am ready for morning registration and by 1.35pm in the afternoons.

Following Government and Warwickshire County Council guidelines, we discourage parents to take their children out of school for holidays during term time. It is very clear that if pupils are not at school the work becomes difficult to follow and that in turn makes it very hard for them to achieve their full potential and particularly harms exam success. However, if it is unavoidable to take your child out of school, a holiday form (available from Reception) should be completed, giving us at least 6 weeks notice.

We aim to treat every child as an individual and bearing this in mind our curriculum has a well developed work-related learning emphasis. All successfully appointed prefects have undergone an industry style selection process and had a management training course off site. Some pupils attend college part time in addition to school. A two week work experience placement and careers counselling all help pupils towards identifying their future career and further education pathways.

Alderman Smith is a constantly changing school, responding to future demands and needs. Developments in Sport, ICT, assessment and target setting, the curriculum and pupil support will keep it at the cutting edge of innovation and challenge. We offer academic excellence in a caring environment.
