Our Aims

The Aims of Our School:
Brookhurst's Vision

BROOKHURST - a place to think and grow

OUR VISION…

Brookhurst aims to be a caring, welcoming, stable and friendly school community, providing the best possible environment for children to learn, to develop and to gain an understanding of the world around them. We want to bring the best out of our children, ensure that they have a fulfilling time at school, and prepare them as fully as possible for the next stage of their lives.

…AND HOW WE PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

We will…

…bring the best out of our children by:

  • helping them fulfil their academic potential

  • using different styles of teaching to ensure learning is always interesting, engaging and fun

  • listening to the children and responding flexibly so those of different abilities can all work at an appropriate pace and to their full potential

  • encouraging the children to ask questions

  • helping the children to understand and adopt a healthy, physically active lifestyle

…ensure our children have a fulfilling time at Brookhurst by:

  • making sure they are happy and safe

  • nurturing their self esteem and confidence

  • teaching them the importance of respecting and valuing other people including good behaviour and politeness

  • seizing opportunities beyond the national curriculum to enhance our children's development

  • showing them how full of wonder and variety the world is, through activities that stimulate their interest in the world around them – locally and globally

prepare our children as fully as possible for the next stage of their lives so

that, when they leave us they:

  • have reached their full academic and all-round potential

  • are eager to keep on learning

  • are inquisitive about their world

  • are confident in their relations with other people

  • are willing and able to make a positive contribution

  • have a strong sense of responsibility

Brookhurst Governors

Who are the governors?

All governors are volunteers who work together for the benefit of the school. They are:

  • Parents elected by other parents with children at the school;
  • The headteacher;
  • Teachers elected by other teachers;
  • Non-teaching staff elected by other non-teaching staff;
  • People appointed by the local education authority;
  • People chosen by governors from the local community.

Please see below for a full list of the present governors and their current responsibilities.

What do governors do?

Our job for the school is to

  • Promote high standards of educational attainment;
  • Set targets for pupil achievement;
  • Take responsibility for strategic planning ;
  • Manage the school's budget , including deciding how many staff will work there and their pay;
  • Ensure that the curriculum is balanced and broadly based, in particular that the National Curriculum and religious education are taught, and report on pupils' achievement in National Curriculum assessments and examination results;
  • Participate in the appointment of senior staff (including appointing the head teacher) and regulate staff conduct and discipline; and
  • Draw up a post-OFSTED action plan after an inspection by the Office for Standards in Education.

The governors at Brookhurst meet regularly as a whole body, but fulfil many of their responsibilities through sub committees.

These sub committees are:

Curriculum, Pupils and Policies (CPP)

Finance

Pay and Personnel

Premises

Each sub committee meets at least once a term and works on areas that fall under their remit. They make recommendations to the governing body which decides on any necessary actions.

If you wish to talk to someone.....

………the first point of contact is the class teacher. If you want to take matters further, you can make an appointment to see Mr Hughes or Miss Stanton via Mrs Chapleo in the school office.

If you want to contact a governor, Pat Chapleo can do that for you too, as she is also clerk to the governors. Our parent governors Carol Collinson, Helen Evans, Karen Hague, James Knight, Chris King and James Sinnott are at school most days and can usually be found lurking by the various exits!

If you would prefer to talk to a governor who is not a parent, Mrs Chapleo can arrange for them to contact you. Please be assured that any governor who has a conflict of interest will ensure that they have no involvement in that particular case. All matters are treated strictly in confidence.

Minutes of governor meetings are available from the office. Any confidential matters that may be discussed at governor meetings are not made public for obvious reasons.

Policies & Guidelines Handbook

You can see a copy of any/all of our policies by contacting the school office.

Although certain elements are governed by legislation and the Local Education Authority, the Policies are specific to Brookhurst.

Also available is the School Development Plan (SDP), a rolling three-year programme of actions aimed at the progressive development and improvement of the school.
