Craig-y-Nos School is one of the longest established independent schools in Wales. Founded in 1920 as a boys' preparatory school, it has evolved in more recent years into an independent primary school educating boys and girls from the age of 2 - 11.

In 1983 the school moved from its central Swansea location to the delightful rural setting of Clyne Common, at the entrance to the Gower Peninsula and an area of outstanding natural beauty. It now stands on a three acre site on the B4436 between Mayals and Bishopston, approximately five miles west of the city centre. (National Grid reference: 594 894)

The school operates a minibus service, using its own vehicles and drivers, and is able to collect children from all parts of the city.

The school has four departments:
  • Playgroup for aged 2 and over.
  • Nursery where the child is four that academic year.
  • Infants three classes for children aged 5, 6 and 7.
  • Juniors four classes for children aged 8, 9, 10 and 11.

Curriculum

Although the school adopts the National curriculum in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, some degree of individuality remains in the other subjects on the curriculum. Welsh begins at age six, French at age 7. History, Geography. R.E., PSE and Information Technology all cover the N.C. work and more, during the school year.

Art, Music and Drama are all well catered for at all ages and these combine to produce a dramatic production in both Infant and Junior departments during the year.

P.E. and Sport are given a share of 15% of the weeks time. All pupils have gym, and Form 4 pupils also attend Squash. All pupils attend swimming during the year and from Infant 3 upwards Games is timetabled for Friday afternoons. Possible sports are rugby, football, hockey in the winter and tennis, cricket, rounders, softball and netball in the summer months. Younger classes are offered mini tennis courses throughout the year.

NURSERY

In the Nursery class children have their fourth birthday during the year. Nursery hours are 9:15am - 3:10pm with an early and late school facility from 8am - 5:30pm. Many children attend for two or three days to begin and then often progress to four or five days by the end of the year, in preparation for full time compulsory school. Full time attendance is possible from the beginning of the year.

In Nursery the children acquire, through a wide range of learning experiences, the various concepts prerequisite to the understanding of mathematical and linguistic teaching they will receive in the Infant classes.

The Nursery class provides an environment in which children learn sharing, caring for and relating to their peers as well as opportunities for creativity through activities such as painting, modelling, montage, frieze making and puppetry.

They Nursery class lays a firm foundation upon which the children can build as they progress towards the more formal learning situations of primary education.
