Croeso! Welcome to our Eco School web site.

Ysgol Penycae is a small community school in the Upper Swansea Valley. There are currently 55 children in the school between the ages of 4 - 11.

Penycae School, although situated next to the main A4067 road, is very lucky to have the most beautiful grounds. Behind the school is a large site comprising of an old oak wood. This has been developed into our "Outside Classroom". The hard work by the pupils, parents, staff and governors together with the National Park Authority has paid off and our grounds and our outside classroom, with its pond is used regularly. At the side of the school you will see our Key Hole Garden, built by parents. In this we grow fruit, vegetables and flowers. We have recently been awarded The Eco Schools Green Flag for the third time! We are the first school in Powys to achieve this. We pride ourselves on our Eco work, caring for the world and our health.

Welsh is taught as a second language but it is also used incidentally in the classrooms. Staff and pupils who speak the language do so naturally at Penycae.

Please see our website links for our Mother and Toddler sessions.

The School Eco Award

The school was the first in Powys to be awarded the prestigious European Green Flag for environmental improvement. The award, issued by Keep Wales Tidy, and a sister award to the Blue Flag issued for Europe's best beaches, reflects the school's commitment to improving our environment.

The pupils made all the key decisions and took action as part of the ECO Schools Programme. Activities included creating a school nature trail, planting a sensory garden, tree planting, saving electricity and recycling.

A Presentation Ceremony took place on Friday 14th December 2001 which was attended by many dignitaries, governors, staff and pupils of the school. The flag now flies at the front of the school.

Second Award

We are thrilled to have now achieved this Eco Award for the second time!

ECO CODE

We always turn off electric lights when not in use.

We turn off all taps and look out for leaks.

We put all litter in a bin and recycle whenever we can.

We take care of our environment and enjoy studying it.

THIRD AWARD!

On Friday 3rd March 2006 we achieved our Eco School Award for the third time. We had a presentation ceremony to celebrate this achievement. Children wrote poems for the occasion, and Mr Gerry Taylor of "Keep Wales Tidy" came to present us with our new flag. Our photos appeared in the local newspaper.
