Headteachers Message

Welcome to Aston Manor a successful, 11-16 mixed comprehensive school in the heart of Birmingham. It serves the inner city communities of Aston, Handsworth and Nechells.

Our GCSE exam results have improved every year for the past nine years. Both students and staff work exceptionally hard and we are committed to ensuring that every child achieves success. We take all Year 11 students away to revise and prepare for their GCSEs and we have a comprehensive Saturday School to support students with coursework and revision.

Sport excels at Aston Manor. Every Saturday morning throughout the year there are numerous activities that students can participate in; not just football and basketball but sports such as rugby, table tennis, wrestling and badminton, to name just a few.

Primary transition is always a priority. A team of staff from Aston Manor School teach in a number of our feeder schools throughout the year and we also run numerous programmes where Year 5 and Year 6 pupils join us in school. This means the transition from Year 6 into Year 7 is as smooth as possible.

We believe that taking students away on residentials is an important part of their development. We have an annual trip for Year 7 pupils to Harlech in Wales, where they are involved in Kayaking, High Rope activities, Orienteering and Archery to name but a few. We also take pupils to Disneyland in Paris and our Prefects have an annual residential in North Wales, where the emphasis is on team building and preparing for their new responsibilities. Each year in May, forty of our students join with pupils from Welford Primary School for a week long trip to Bendrigg in the Lake District.

June 2006 saw our second Year 11 Prom. This is always a magical evening.

Something that is unique to Aston Manor is our ‘Daily Planner’ in which pupils’ efforts and conduct are rewarded lesson by lesson. Commendation stamps are recorded in pupils planners at the end of each lesson and these indicate to parents whether their child has worked as hard as they can all day. I wish my own children had been able to have such a system when they were at school! We believe that parental support is vital to an individuals success and we are proud of the excellent relationship we have with our parents.

We pride ourselves on having a range of healthy food options available each lunchtime as well as snacks at breaktimes. Moving away from fatty foods such as chips and crisps hasn't been easy but we meet with students on a regular basis and they have helped to ensure we have successful menu's.

We always welcome visitors to our school, please telephone so that we can arrange for some students to show you around the school.

School Information

Aston Manor has a strong reputation for providing an excellent education for all its pupils in a friendly and caring environment.

Our school caters for children of all abilities in a well-disciplined environment and through a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Our staff are highly qualified, experienced and committed to ensuring that every pupil reaches his or her potential.

We currently have over 730 pupils on roll and pride ourselves on being a close-knit community, in which everyone feels valued and involved. This enables children transferring from primary schools to settle in very quickly.

We are proud of the way in which our pupils conduct themselves both in school and outside. Visitors frequently compliment them on their 'confident and courteous behaviour'. During every lesson, pupils' efforts and conduct are monitored by staff.

Commendation stamps are recorded in their planners at the end of a lesson. These are monitored by form tutors in afternoon registration. This programme ensures that pupils who are working well are rewarded; it also indicates those pupils who could try harder.

This reward system keeps parents informed, lesson by lesson, about how their child is progressing. It draws on a support network which involves form tutors, heads of department, heads of year, assistant head teachers, parents and ultimately, the head teacher and school governors.

You are more than welcome to come and visit us at any time, arrangements can be made by contacting the school on 0121 359 8108
