WELCOME

Welcome to the Edgbaston High School for Girls website. I hope that the site will give you a flavour of what Edgbaston High School is like.

We are an all girls school from 2½ to 18 and have a lively vibrant community of girls, teachers and support staff. Throughout the school we offer a modern education based on traditional values.

Our aim is to provide the highest quality of education for girls at every stage. This is achieved through an energetic and encouraging approach to the full education and development of each individual and by wide commitment to the strong community at the School’s heart. It is supported by abundant and excellent resources which complement good teaching and a culture of learning in all areas of the School.

Schools are places of growth. We strive to provide every opportunity for this from Westbourne to the Sixth Form. We want girls to be so stimulated and challenged during their time here that they not only meet but exceed expectations. Those expectations combine the many successes of academic and extra-curricular life with high personal standards of integrity, care and commitment.

We are proud of our girls; they work hard and give a great deal back to the school and society in general; they value their education and their school and leave us confident in their abilities and with a good sense of who they are.

ETHOS

Edgbaston High School is a lively, happy, caring community in which every girl matters, in which she is given full encouragement from an outstandingly united and committed Staff and in which every facet of her abilities and talents is carefully considered and developed.

In a brisk and purposeful atmosphere for learning, personal and academic growth are  enhanced by the richness of opportunity offered through a broad and progressive curriculum and stimulating extra-curricular programme.

Strong emphasis is laid on pastoral care and support from Staff to pupils and among the girls themselves.  A high premium is set on enthusiastic, active involvement, whether this be in sport, music, drama or House and other community activities.  The development of these personal strengths goes hand-in-hand with academic achievement in providing each girl with the foundation for a successful and satisfying life.

 

ADMISSION

ADMISSION TO LOWER SCHOOL

The Head of Lower School is pleased to welcome parents who wish to make an initial visit at any mutually convenient time.  There are also three Open Days in September, January and May.  Parents may, at this point, register their daughter for admission.
 

Westbourne (Age 2½ - 5)

Entry from 2½ years is determined by the following criteria:
a) that the pupil is physically, emotionally and socially ready to be away from home in a more formal learning environment.
b) that  the pupil is ready to participate and progress in such an environment.
In the term prior to their chosen point of entry girls will be invited to attend a pre-admission visit.  They spend approximately one hour with their prospective year group to determine if they are ready to join us.  A discussion with parents will follow to agree an appropriate starting date.
 

Preparatory Department (Age 5 – 11)

The main entrance test is held in January.  Candidates sit papers in Mathematics, English and NVR and will have a short interview with the Head or Deputy Head of Lower School.  Whilst entry is determined by these tests emphasis is also placed on a girl’s potential ability to benefit from the high academic standards and broad based curriculum at Edgbaston High School.  A confidential report from the girl’s present school will also be requested.

ADMISSION TO SENIOR SCHOOL

Entry at 11+

Girls are required to take tests in:
  ·  English
  ·  Mathematics
  ·  a short dictation to assess grammar and spelling
  ·  and to be interviewed.
Extra time may be allowed in Entrance Tests
a) where an up-to-date Educational Psychologist’s Report supporting and requesting this is submitted with the application for entry, and
b) following an interview with parents to ascertain the suitability of the provision which EHS can currently make for pupils with Special Educational Needs.
 
A confidential report on achievement and progress is requested from candidates’ present schools.
All candidates are usually interviewed. The School reserves the right not to interview candidates on the basis of poor performance in the written Entrance Tests and is under no obligation to enter into correspondence concerning such decisions.
Entrance Tests for admission in September take place in January and offers of places are made in mid February. Parents’ decisions on acceptance (or otherwise) are required on, or as soon as possible following, the first Monday in March – a date agreed by local independent schools.
 

Entry other than at 11+

Admission in other age groups is dependent on the availability of places and performance in selective entry tests.
A selective admissions test at the appropriate age level is administered in core subjects:
  ·  English 
  ·  Mathematics
  ·  French (or the pupil's core Modern Foreign Language)
A report is requested from the present school/An interview is arranged
 

ADMISSION TO SIXTH FORM

All candidates for the Sixth Form, internal and external, are interviewed and are required to obtain minimum qualifications for entry of:
  ·  5 GCSE A*-C (including English and Mathematics)
  ·  A*/A/B in subjects they wish to pursue at AS and A2 levels
Places are offered conditional upon these attainments, following interview and, for external candidates, a confidential report from their present schools.
Progression from Year 11 to the Sixth Form and from the Lower Sixth (AS) to Upper Sixth (A2) courses is dependent in all cases upon sustained good progress and attitude. The Headmistress and Head of Sixth Form will advise when progress is giving cause for concern.
