Ysgol Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd

Background

Llanfair School is a Bilingual primary school located in the countryside near the village of Llanfair in the Vale of Clwyd. Children travel here from the surrounding areas (Pwllglas, Graigfechan and Llanfair) for their education.

Due to its bilingual status, the pupils are taught in both Welsh and English, therefore by coming to Llanfair School, children from bilingual and English medium homes, as well as those from Welsh homes, have taken advantage of the opportunity to extend their horizons and to enjoy the wealth of two cultures.

Tour of the School

Early Years Classroom

Early Years Department

Mrs Eirian Jones teaches the Early Years children (Nursery and Reception), with the help of the Nursery Assistant, Mrs Nia Roberts. Here the children are divided between two rooms.

The classrooms are large and appealing with plenty of displays and children's work on the walls. The rooms have been divided into a number of areas where different activities are held - the cosy corner where the children sit to talk and have discussions with the teacher, the reading corner and the computers' corner.

Years 1 and 2 Classroom

Years 1 and 2

The teaching of the Key Stage 1 children is shared between Mrs Ceri Roberts and Mrs Iona McKee.

This classroom is again decorated with displays of the children's work on the walls and is divided into different areas for different activities.

Years 3 and 4 Classroom

Years 3 and 4

Mrs Llinos Hughes, the Headteacher, teaches Years 3 and 4. At the start of their time in Key Stage 2, the children have a number of valuable experiences that will prepare them for their transition to the final years of the school.

Key Stage 2 children are offered instrumental lessons. They also visit the Technology Centre in Denbigh once a term for specialist lessons in Technology and Information Technology, and they can take part in trips that form part of the term's work, e.g to the Legacy Centre (Celts) in Wrexham, Chirk Castle etc.

Classroom for Years 5 and 6

Years 5 and 6

Miss Fflur Huws is the elder children's class teacher. Their classroom is located in a brand new mobile classroom.

As the number of children in the school is relatively small, everyone has a chance to take part in a variety of activities, both within the school and at a county level, e.g. football and netball tournaments, swimming competitions and the Urdd Eisteddfod.

The garden

Outside

The children have the use of two yards and a large field.

Following numerous money raising events by the PTA and a successful grants bid, the school has been able to buy a polytunnel in which to grow flowers and vegetables. A small garden has also been developed.
