Admissions to St. Philip Howard School are dealt with by the Headteacher and the Governors’ Admissions Committee on behalf of the Governors of the School. The Governors recognise that under the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, parents have a right to express a preference for the School and Governors have a duty to comply with that preference consistent with the need to provide an efficient education including efficiency in the use of resources. The standard number for admission to Y7 agreed with Derbyshire County Council Education Committee is 91. This Standard Number lays down the maximum number of children that the Governors consider can be admitted in the Y7 intake group. Parents wishing for a place at St. Philip Howard Catholic School for the September intake should apply on the LEA's application form no later than the 1st December of the previous academic year. The LEA will then inform St Philip Howard Catholic School of all applications that have been made. The governors will then inform parents of offers of places.
The Governors of the School have a responsibility, laid down by law to maintain the Catholic character of their school and their admissions will be controlled with this in mind.
Criteria for Admission
St. Philip Howard School exists first and foremost to serve the Catholic community in the Glossopdale and Longdendale area i.e. the parishes of St. Mary’s, Glossop - All Saints, Old Glossop, St. Charles Borromeo, Hadfield, The Immaculate Conception, Broadbottom and St. Margaret, Gamesley.
The Governors have therefore decided that the criteria below will be applied to all admissions. In the event of the number of applications exceeding the number of places the criteria will be applied in the following order of priority:
i) All baptised Catholic children who live within the boundaries of the parishes listed above will be admitted first
ii) Baptised Catholic children who live outside that area will form the second category
iii) Children who are members of other Christian denominations (supported by an appropriate Minister of religion
iv) Brothers and sisters of children already at St. Philip Howard School will be accepted next
v) Children other than Catholic children who attend our Catholic Partner Primary Schools (St. Mary’s, All Saints, St. Margaret’s, St. Charles)
vi) Children of other faiths whose parents express a wish for an education founded on strong spiritual values
vii) In the event of any category being oversubscribed the Governors’ Admissions Committee will interview the applicants concerned to determine their level of support for the school’s ethos and any available places will be allocated on this basis
viii) Where application for admission is received mid-year the above criteria will be applied, where the year group is oversubscribed, by the Governors’ Admissions Committee. Where there are vacancies in a given year group, casual admissions are delegated to the Headteacher. All application involving a new family of siblings will be considered by the Admissions Committee
ix) Baptismal certificates of Catholics and letters of support from an appropriate Minister of Religion for applicants of other Christian denominations or other faiths should be produced at the time of the application
Where an application for admission has been refused parents may lodge an appeal against the Governors’. The Headteacher will pass on the appeal to an Independent Appeals Panel in accordance with the Schools Standards and Framework Act 1998. The decision of the Appeals Panel is binding on the Governors of the School. |
